Staying Alive (formerly Le Bon Samaritain) is a non-profit organisation that has been mapping automated external defibrillators (AEDs) since 2010 and, since 2016, has been improving the response to cardiac arrest through a network of citizen responders. Deployed across 90 metropolitan and overseas departments, Staying Alive relies on a community of 500,000 citizen responders. In the event of a cardiac arrest, emergency services (Fire Services and EMS/SAMU) receive the call from a witness and dispatch their usual resources. At the same time, through the Staying Alive platform, nearby citizen responders are located, alerted and mobilised. Having received the alert via the Staying Alive mobile application installed on their smartphones, these responders can be asked to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or to retrieve a defibrillator. Alongside this citizen alert system, Staying Alive carries out a wide range of complementary actions: - raising public awareness and providing first aid training for companies; - relying on a nationwide network of local coordinators who support citizen responders after an intervention; - improving the national defibrillator registry, Géo’DAE, through a partnership with the Direction générale de la Santé (DGS); - actively contributing to population resilience in partnership with the Direction générale de la Sécurité civile et de la gestion des crises (DGSCGC); - recognising the commitment of citizen responders through a personalised card enabling them to identify themselves during interventions. In 2026, Staying Alive will relaunch the Ma Commune a du Cœur label, designed to recognise municipalities actively engaged in the fight against cardiac arrest. Today, Staying Alive’s expertise extends internationally, notably to Luxembourg, Belgium and Canada, driven by a single ambition: to make every citizen an essential link in the chain of survival.
